Native Afghanistan, Indian Subcontinent, Indo-China, Malesia ecozone. Habitat - lowland forest, usually near rivers or the sea. Shrub or small tree up to ca 13 m tall. Fruits and shoots edible and commonly used in Laksa noodles and eaten raw as Malay salad dipped in chilli-shrimp paste, "sambal".Synonyms:Barringtonia rubra Baill. ex Laness.
