Gila monster (16093662778)
Description:
Description: If you're in rocky areas of desert scrub at high elevations, keep an eye out for the elusive Gila monster. The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum cinctumis) is not only venomous but is also the largest lizard in the United States, reaching up to two feet long and five pounds. Not to worry, the Gila monster is rarely seen, spending more than 95% of its time underground. In California, the lizard is most often sighted in San Bernardino County, and it is listed as a Species of Special Concern by CDFW. For more details on this species and other reptiles in California, visit www.californiaherps.com or the CDFW site at www.wildlife.ca.gov. (Photo by RD Bowlus.). Date: 14 January 2015, 12:14.
