The stoat or ermine can be found almost everywhere throughout the northern temperate, subarctic and Arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. It has a rich brown coat which changes to white in regions that experience an inch or more of snow for at least forty days of the year. The white winter coat was highly prized and used for making the robes of the Lord Chief Justice of England. Many furs were sewn together, creating a pattern of black dots - the ermine's tail retains its black tip in all seasons.
