Description:

Description: Clitocybe umbilicata at the side of a track in a forest near Baden Baden, Germany. Date: 27 September 2007. Source: Self-photographed. Author: User:Strobilomyces. Identification notes[edit] Hygrophanous - light beige on drying. Margin not striate. No distinctive smell was identified. Cap up to 6cm. There was some sign of a whitish ring under the gills and other white patches on the stipe, but this character was not very distinct. Spores approx. 7.5×4.5µ The nearest trees were beech and oak, but there were a considerable number of conifers nearby. Fir needles can be seen in the photo as well as deciduous leaves. The mushrooms must be Clitocybe umbilicata or Clitocybe subspadicea. Note that C. subspadicea is often not recognized as a separate species, being ignored or considered a variety of the commoner C. umbilicata. Incidentally, sometimes mushrooms of this group are classified instead in genus Gerronema (e.g. Gerronema umbilicus). The specimens were growing near mixed conifers and broad-leaved trees, so the associated trees do not help the identification. The cap colour agrees better with C. umbilicata (the other should be more russet) and also the size is a bit big for C. subspadicea.
