This lizard is one of the rarest reptiles on Earth. The species is sexually dimorphic: females have smaller body size and small dorsal crests (see above), while males are larger and have more prominent dorsal crests (see elsewhere in this album). Population estimates indicate that only several hundred individuals exist on Earth today. San Salvador rock iguanas are principally herbivores. The rocks are eolian aragonitic calcarenite limestones of Pleistocene age (probably the Owl's Hole Formation, Middle Pleistocene). The rusty brown-colored surface is a near-earliest Holocene, ~9200 year-old calcrete (a.k.a. terra rosa paleosol). Calcretes are modern or ancient calcium-carbonate rich soil horizons that are rock hard. The term "terra rosa" refers to the rusty brown coloration of iron oxide (hematite & limonite), which is typical of fossil soil horizons in the Bahamas rock record.
