Hoverfly

Image of Toxomerus geminatus (Say 1823)

Description:

A small hoverfly, Toxomerus geminatus. This is a female, and was taking nectar from a cultivated native aster after a rainstorm. There were several fresh-appearing flies on the flowers--I think the rain might have led to a fresh emergence (eclosure) from pupae. Length is 6-8 mm.
