view of a tuber: in this tuber, the previous year portion is seen at the right, while this year's portion, with attached petioles, is seen at the left. The intra-tuber portion is about 8 mm long. Also evident are little, ca. 2 mm diameter turions which are formed on the ascending portion of the tuber; these have an apparent abscision zone and are readily detached, one turion can be seen on the 2009 tuber; also note at the far left the projection which is growing leftward and which at this date the 2011 tuber is not yet differentiated
