This photomicrograph depicted a magnified view of brain tissue within which was a centrally located Acanthamoeba sp. cyst. Acanthamoeba spp. are opportunistic free-living amebae, capable of causing granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE) in individuals with compromised immune systems.
