Kobonga umbrimargo How do you like this cicada I found in the back yard flapping around on the ground. It is one I have never seen. It was clinging to a stick which is showing between the end of the forewings. ~50mm longPhoto: Jean

I found that we had photographed this wonderful Cicada on 25 February 2012 in the middle of the day. I am posting it for the records. Don't you love its name! :-)Also photographed in Swan View, Western Australia

It was a pleasure to see this large Cicada again in our back yard as I have been hearing them singing. They can be found in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Its song

Fulgora laternaria--this is cropped, and enhanced, from a
BHL plate of Cuvier's
La Regne Animal. Summary of processing:-cropped to show just the color illustration on the larger plate-rotated a little to get axis of insect vertical-a couple of printing errors and smudges cloned out-whitepoint set to background (removes yellowing of paper)-curves adjusted to enhance contrast a bit-slight increase in color saturation-downsampled from about 1600 pixel width in original scan to 1400 pixels wide-very mild unsharp mask applied (Image replaced 7/9/13 with one with cleaner background--whitepoint averaged over larger area, and background also given a Gaussian blur. I could only see the flaw on certain monitors.)

We have had some rain and it is so wonderful. I went to check the garden and noticed this little one sitting on the daisies. It is the first time I have been able to get a reflection in a water bubble and I wasn't even trying.
