Heteronematine euglenids, colourless, phagotrophic, rigid, slightly flattened cells, with longitudinal fluting and ridges; ingestion organelle composed of rods fused together to make a protrusible tube (siphon); cytostome separate from canal opening but both lie in a common apical depression; both flagella emergent, unequal in length and thickness, one directed anteriorly when gliding, the other trailing; not very speciose, but common and cosmopolitan in freshwater ponds and lakes; very similar to Ploeotia from which it is distinguished by the protrusibility of the siphon; type species: Entosiphon sulcatum (Dujardin, 1841) Stein, 1878
