Stout brown mushroom with a rough cap and scaly when old Cap: 6-12cm, brown, reddish-brown or yellowish-brown (margin is lighter), young one is smooth then rough and somewhat scaly, convex up to broadly convex (rarely cone shape for young) and sometimes with indistinct knob (the older is the more irregular shape); margin usually rolled in and has radial cracks (the drier the more). Flesh is white or whitish. Gills: attached, moderately broad, close to almost distant, white up to reddish-brown or yellowish-coloring along when old or after damage. Odor is weak and unpleasant. Stalk: 5-12cm long, 2-3.5cm thick and often enlarged toward base, white or brownish-white, sometimes with brown colored surface below a cap margin or with fibrous like hatch along; sometimes hollow when old. Habitat: small groups or big crowded clusters scattered in pine-tree forest with some birches. Edibility: no accurate data (method of fermentation was failed and made dark brown coloring).
