Mature males have a well developed frontal hump. Spawning occurs in holes dug in the substrate and both parents watch over their eggs and alevins (Ref. 35237, 13371).

Found in lentic habitats with turbid, as well as clear waters (Ref. 35237). Acquires deeper color in clear water. Prefers shady zones of quiet waters where it catches its preys at the surface (Ref. 35237). Feeds on insects at or above the surface.
