Leaves are ovate to lanceolate, mostly 2–8 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, light green, scabrous on both surfaces, strongly 3-veined from the base and finely toothed; main veins are usually hairy below. Flowerheads are axillary, with tiny male, female and bisexual flowers mixed, although male flowers predominate. Perianth is 4- or 5-lobed. Drupes are round, black, shiny and to 4 mm wide. Widespread in regrowth and margins of rainforest, in moist sclerophyll forest and in open rocky areas. Recorded as being toxic to stock, but it is not usually eaten except under dry conditions.
