"This White Birch Tree measures 18 ft. in circumference. On information received from The American Forests & Forest Life, Washington, D.C., who published an article about it in Nov. 1923, The State Forester Boston, and the Museum of Natural History, New York, it is so far as know, the largest tree of its kind in the World."

Betula papyrifera, paper birch or American white birch. Maine, 28th November 2008, mixed coastal forest. The identification by Bob Andersen (thanks Bob) is tentative and I would welcome confirmation or correction. This is the birch that was used for the skins of canoes.
