Atlantic Sturgeon

Acipenser sturio (Atlantic Sturgeon) is a species of ray-finned fishes in the family sturgeons. They are listed as critically endangered by IUCN and in cites appendix i. They are associated with freshwater habitat. They are solitary carnivores. Individuals can grow to 600 cm. They have sexual reproduction. Reproduction is oviparous and iteroparous.

  • Definition: Appendix I lists species that are the most endangered among CITES-listed animals and plants. They are threatened with extinction and CITES prohibits international trade in specimens of these species except when the purpose of the import is not commercial, for instance for scientific research. Article VII of the Convention provides for a number of exemptions to this general prohibition.
