Description: Adults dusky to almost black. Eye with yellow iris and black spot on pectoral fin base (Ref. 48636). Body depth 1.8-2.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).

分布於西太平洋區，由印尼到斐濟，北至琉球群島，南至新加勒多尼亞。台灣發現於北部、南部及蘭嶼等地。

小型之雀鯛，無食用價值。有人將其作觀賞魚之用。

體呈橢圓形而側扁，標準體長為體高之1.8-2.0倍。吻短而鈍圓。口中型；頜齒兩列，小而呈圓錐狀。眶下骨裸出，下緣具鋸齒；前鰓蓋骨後緣具鋸齒。體被櫛鱗；鼻部具鱗；側線之有孔鱗片16-17個。背鰭單一，軟條部不延長而略呈角形，硬棘XIII，軟條13-15；臀鰭硬棘II，軟條14-15；胸鰭鰭條16-17；尾鰭叉形，上下葉末端呈圓狀。成魚體暗色至幾乎黑色的；眼睛具黃色的虹彩。胸鰭灰色，基部全為黑色；餘鰭暗色。

主要發現於水道與外礁斜坡區，也可在水流向下且清澈的礁石平臺區至水深40 公尺處的水域。獨居或形成小群魚群生存。以浮游動物與底藻為食。
