This species is superficially very similar to Parmelia saxatilis:
1184056. Both species are very common in Britain, and they occur on trees and rocks. They are also similar in that their lobes are covered in a network of white lines (in this photograph, they are best seen at the edges of the lobes). However, in P. sulcata, the upper surface (cortex) breaks open along these lines to give rise to powdery masses called "soralia". Like isidia (see the link for P. saxatilis, above), these are a means of asexual reproduction; soralia are made up of tiny powdery bundles called "soredia", containing a few algal cells wrapped up in fungal threads. When dispersed to a suitable site, these can develop into a new lichen. The lichen shown in this photograph is growing on a fence post beside a dry-stone wall. The two little orange blobs (near the left and at the bottom of the image) are not related to the lichen, but are simply a couple of dry fruiting bodies of Common Jellyspot Fungus:
