Gram-negative, ovoid to rod-shaped bacteria, phototrophic, use ammonia as a nitrogen source. Some are found only in sulfide-containing freshwater habitats exposed to light while others may occur in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. Motile by means of polar flagella.
