Hercules Beetle (Scarabeus hercules = Dynastes hercules, plate 40b) from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. I don't see the set of scarab beetle plates in the BHL Flickr set--I found this by paging through the reference on BHL itself. I cleaned up the background, cropped, and downsampled from the original to produce this one. Usually this species is shown in a lateral view--interesting to see a dorsal portrait.
Goliath Beetle and others, plate 45 from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. Again, I don't see this one in the BHL photostream here on Flickr, so this is my own edited, cropped version based on the BHL scan. Species:1=Trichius fasciatus Lin.2=Platygenia barbata Schoen3=Cetonia aurata Lin4=Goliathus giganteus Lamarck; though listed as such, pattern is that of Goliathus regius5=Gymnetis nitida Fab. = Cotinis nitida (Linnaeus, 1758)
A lovely plate of Longhorn beetles from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. (Insectes also authored by Pierre Latreille.) Illustrator was apparently Emile Blanchard, engraver "LeBrun". Illustrated are:1-Leptocera scripta Lin = Glaucytes scripta = Glaucytes interrupta (Olivier, 1792)2-Acrocinus longimanus Lin.3-Acanthocinus aedilis Fab.4-Tetraopes varicornis Klug.I did the usual background clean-up and some light cropping and downsampling to produce this image from the BHL original. This is the archetypal image of the harlequin beetle (Acrocinus longimanus), and it was reproduced in other works later, often as a simple engraving. I had not seen the colored original before bumping into it on BHL.
