Description of Lithocolla

Lithocolla is a filose amoeba covered by external siliceous elements, possibly sand grains. It rolls along the substrate extending and withdrawing very straight and thin filopods, bodyrounded small to medium (10 - 50 µm) body, but with various irregular particles adhering to the outer surface. Most similar in appearance to the nucleariid filose amoebae which also have adhering structures. From marine, brackish water and freshwater. Cysts and non-amoeboid stages in life cycle are not reported. One species.
