Common Scurvygrass

Cochlearia officinalis L.

Brief Summary

provided by Ecomare
Scurvy-grass species were used in earlier days on board ships as a source of Vitamin C, particularly for preventing scurvy. In the Netherlands, long-leaved scurvy-grass, also known as English scurvy-grass, is found almost exclusively along the Wadden Sea coast. For unknown reasons, the plant is has disappeared from the delta region. This plant grows on marshes, particularly on muddy ridges with lots of (shore) bird droppings. It is often found together with sea wormwood. In addition to marshes, long-leaved scurvy grass also grows between stones on sea dikes.
