Image location: Rio Azul Natural Protected Area, El Bolson, Rio Negro, Argentina Habitat: Near and in ancient Los Alerces forest groves (said to be 2,000-3,000+ years old): Fitzroya cupressoides within 20m of small creeks, dense canopy cover, high humidity. Elevation approximately 1000m. Substrate: Rock. Appears to be igneous – granite-like type. Description: Primary thallus is light green saxicolous crust, secondary thallus looks like a light pink jelly-fungi-like basidiomycete, in some cases stalk growing upwards more than 2-3mm above primary thallus. Never seen anything like these ones before… No specimen collected. This lichen seen at other locations in general area, morphological characteristics appeared consistent at these different locations. I don´t even know what the anatomy of those weird wrinkly orangish growths are -- are they parasitic? cephalodia? Bizarre.. Update: Curtis tells me this isPlacopsis and those orange things are in fact cephalodia (contain a secondary photobiont, in this case a cyanobacteria, while the main photobiont under the surface of the rest of the lichen is a green algae). It is one of the few (only?) crustose genera that has cephalodia (outgrowths -- the small brown rosette, for example, on the right side -- that contain cyanobacteria in addition to the regular green algae present in the rest of the thallus) Français : Ce beau lichen crustacé (encroûtant), Placopsis est abondant sur le basalte et le granit. Kuntze MycoBank Image location: Bootlegger’s Run Trail, Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park, Maryland Heights, Missouri, USA Having just read Lawrence Millman’s article in the most recent FUNGI journal about this tiny, orange ascomycete (“A particularly large specimen may be a millimeter in diameter …”) that fruits in the resin oozing from White Pine cankers, I could hardly believe my luck when I spotted these specimens fruiting from the resin of the first White Pine I encountered. These specimens measured barely 0.5 mm. In the thumbnail image, that’s my thumbnail (for scale) — no pun intended — in the lower left side of the photo. Several patches of this lichen were growing on peaty soil at the side of a footpath; it appeared to be colonizing places where soil had fallen away fairly recently (within the last year or so), exposing some fresh but steep surfaces. As can be seen here, the lichen consists of a greenish crust, with little brownish fruiting bodies; these were each about a millimetres across, and they had fairly short stalks, so that they were almost resting on the crust (in this species, the extent to which the fruiting bodies are stalked can vary a great deal). [A species that is quite similar to this one, and with which it might be confused, is Dibaeis baeomyces (syn. Baeomyces roseus).] This lichen probably serves a useful purpose in helping to hold together soil surfaces which would otherwise be quickly washed away.
