Differs from all remaining Hypostomus species with light spots on a darker backgroundby two independent characters: teeth with two symmetrical cusps (vs. two asymmetrical cusps in Hypostomus albopunctatus, Hypostomus lexi, Hypostomus margaritifer, Hypostomus meleagris, Hypostomus microstomus, Hypostomus regani, Hypostomus scaplyceps, Hypostomus strigaticeps, Hypostomus tietensis, and Hypostomus variipictus), and each mandibular ramus with 122-267 teeth, mean = 196.8 (vs. 127 teeth at most in Hypostomus ternetzi, the congener with highest tooth number in each mandibular ramus from upper rio Paraná basin) (Ref. 75037).
