Description: English: Yellow Fly of the Dismal Swamp - Diachlorus ferrugatus, Archbold Biological Station, Venus, Florida. I didn't notice this horsefly until it bit me. It serves me right for wearing Tevas while out doing bug photography. It was worth it though - the fly is stunning, and it has an interesting name. In a Time Magazine article about the Great Dismal Swamp, it states "the Dismal Swamp's yellow fly, they still say, will politely lift a man's hat from his head so as to get a better bite at his ears". I was fortunate to only get bitten on my foot. Date: 25 August 2012, 18:00:27. Source:
