In the first year only rosettes develop. In the second year a tall (up to 1.5 m), slander flowering stalks develop. The plant is widely distributed. Native to Europe, Asia and North Africa it is now naturalized also in North America, where it was introduced 200 years ago. The seeds are extremely long lived.
