parasitic wasp - Chelonus sp. (Braconidae) -

Image of braconid wasps

Description:

Cheloninae is a rather large cosmopolitan subfamily of Braconidae. They are solitary egg-larval endoparasitoids of Lepidoptera, ovipositing into the host egg but not killing the host until the end of its larval life (koinobiont), after it has prepared a pupation retreat. Like most egg-larval koinobionts, chelonines mainly exploit host groups that have concealed larvae. Females oviposit inside the host egg and sub-sequently, at the beginning of the third larval instar, theparasitoid leaves it to become a pupa (Gauld & Bolton1996, Garcia-Martn et al. 2005)Possible effects of inter-specific competition on the coexistence of two parasitoid species: Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko and Chelonus oculator (F.) (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae, Braconidae) (PDF Download Available). Available from: www.researchgate.net/publication/256445832_Possible_effec...
