Robust perennial herb, up to 1.4 m tall, often forming clumps. leaves subdistichous, 4-7(12) per plant, sheathing at the base, 12-75 cm long, linear to linear-lanceolate, hairless; margins rough, sometimes shortly ciliate. Inflorescence a dense spike, up to 25 cm long on a terete peduncle up to 95 cm long, well exserted above the leaves. Flowers solitary in each bract, small, bell-shaped, white. Fruit an obovoid, 3-angled capsule, 4-8 mm long.
