Staurastrum pilosum BREB. Synonym: Staurastrum brebissonii ARCH.The cells are only a little braoder than long, the cell halves are oblong elliptical, the cell ends are flatly rounded off. The central cut is deep and extends towards the periphery. The cell wall is occupied with closely standing, concentrically arranged rows of pricks. The vertex view looks triangular with concave sides. Staurastrum bicorne HAUPTFL. The cells including their protrusions appr. 1.3 times wider than long. The cell halves are bell-shaped and have a little swelling on the base. The cell arms are straight or small inward curved with one pair of pricks each at the ends. Along the cell ends the cell wall is covered with a row of warts with multiple apices. Dimension: Length 60 70 µm, width 75 100 µm.Ecology: Sporadic in the Alps in medium acidic zones of moorlands and mountain lakes.Occurrence: Ubiquitous, mainly in colder climes (among others in Alaska, the Arctic, Newfoundland).Copyright by Prof. Rupert Lenzenweger, Ried im Innkreis, Austria. Staurastrum gratum WHELDEN The cells are 1/3 longer than wide coarsely oval in shape, tri-radial, but similar to a Cosmarium. Thr central cuts are shallow, the cell edges with small waves. The cell wall is covered with concentric rings of small warts. The vertex view is triangular with broadly rounded off ends.
