Biology

provided by Fishbase
Inhabits swamps, quiet pools and backwaters, either in open, shallow stretches or the vegetated margins of these areas. Found around the shelter of rocks and vegetation on the bottom, also in streams draining into lakes (Ref. 44894). Believed to spawn in winter or spring following rains. Sexual maturity is reached after one year for males and two years for females. Fecundity is typically low; spawning females lay between 70-500 eggs in well-sheltered sites (underneath rocks). The eggs require around 50-60 days to hatch (Ref. 44894). Feeds on aquatic insects and their larvae, also small invertebrates (Ref. 44894).
