we were lucky enough to seee still many bulbs blooming in Niewoudtville at the end of September. One of them is this narrowly distributed species - Sparaxis elegans - that was cultivated and spread throughout the world. It was great to see it in its wild habitat with many other blubous species.
Niewoudtville is one of the centre of endemic bulbs. Herre you can see the orange Sparaxis elegans with blue Geissorhiza and many other tinier flowers.
many of us think that bulbs grow in arid habitats and it is not exactly so. Here you can see carpets of Sparaxis grandiflora blooming in low-wet flats at the Cape Peninsula. These places dry out only in summer.
