2011-08-25 Vienna XXII. district - Lobau heath, bushfire place (155 msm Quadrant 7864/2).The flowering period of this orchid only begins in late summer, a good month after the bushfire happened; it had no aerial growth then. So the only thing the fire might have done to it is burning through the ground where its bulb sits - but it didn't damage this one; where I found this specimen all the grass was burnt in july.On some places however the fire reached deeper - especially where there was fire-wood lying around (especially big Populus nigra logs - they burned hot, and long); I guess that on those badly burnt places most underground growth was annihilated.Click here for more information about this year's bushfire.
