Opuntia rufida ist eine Pflanzenart in der Gattung der Opuntien (Opuntia) aus der Familie der Kakteengewächse (Cactaceae). Das Artepitheton rufida bedeutet ‚fuchsrot‘. Ein englischer Trivialname ist „Blind Prickly Pear“.
Opuntia rufida wächst strauchig mit mehreren Hauptzweigen und erreicht Wuchshöhen von 1 bis 1,5 Meter. Ein Stamm wird nur selten ausgebildet. Die kreisrunden, blaugrünen bis graugrünen Triebabschnitte sind 7,5 bis 20 Zentimeter lang, ebenso breit und 1 bis 1,5 Zentimeter dick. Die konischen Blattrudimente weisen eine Länge von bis zu 4,5 Millimetern auf. Die kreisrunden, 0,5 bis 2,5 Zentimeter auseinanderstehenden Areolen tragen auffällige, rötliche oder rötlich braune, leicht abfallende Glochiden, aber keine Dornen.
Die zunächst hellgelben Blüten werden später orange und erreichen eine Länge und einen Durchmesser von 6 bis 7,5 Zentimeter. Die fleischigen, leuchtend roten Früchte sind ellipsoid und leicht gehöckert. Sie sind bis zu 2,5 Zentimeter lang und weisen einen Durchmesser von 1,5 bis 2 Zentimeter auf.
Opuntia rufida ist in den Vereinigten Staaten im Bundesstaat Texas sowie den mexikanischen Bundesstaaten Chihuahua und Coahuila in Höhenlagen von 600 bis 1050 Metern verbreitet.
Die Erstbeschreibung wurde 1856 von George Engelmann veröffentlicht.[1] Nomenklatorische Synonyme sind Opuntia microdasys var. rufida (Engelm.) K.Schum. (1898) und Opuntia microdasys subsp. rufida (Engelm.) U.Guzmán & Mandujano (2003).
In der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten der IUCN wird die Art als „Least Concern (LC)“, d. h. als nicht gefährdet geführt. Die Entwicklung der Populationen wird als stabil angesehen.[2]

Opuntia rufida is a multi-branched cactus that may reach 3 to 5 feet tall and a bit wider. The plant generally has a short trunk, and the thickish tomentose pads are subcircular, obovate, or elliptical. Areoles are spineless but have showy red-brown glochids. In mid-spring the plant produces a profusion of brilliant yellow flowers changing to orange and red, 3 to 4 inches across. In summer, the oblong fruit is bright red to purple, 2 to 3 inches long.
The plant can be a spectacular addition to the desert garden. It requires full sun and is highly tolerant of desert heat. However, the glochids tend to dislodge easily when the plant is bumped or shaken and they can be dangerous to humans and animals if carried by the wind. In fact, the common name blind prickly pear or cow blinder refers to the blinding of animals by the airborne glochids. The species rufida refers to the ruddy, reddish-brown glochids.[4][3]
Opuntia rufida is native to the Big Bend area of southwestern Texas and the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico.[4]
Opuntia rufida has been planted as an ornamental in Queensland, Australia but has since been recognized as Prohibited invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2015. As a result, it may not be sold or moved and must be reported to Biosecurity Queensland.[5]
