Atlantic Great Piddock

Zirfaea crispata (Linnaeus 1758)

Brief Summary

provided by Ecomare
Oval piddocks are reasonably thick-shelled, with their top point situated slightly off-centered. This point has a distinguished curled edge. Single valves regularly wash onto all Dutch beaches, while live animals can be found in washed-up blocks of peat. Sometimes, you find dark gray shells. These are fossils, dating back to the Eemian Period, around 100,000 years ago.
