Description: This is a common crab that really shovels its food down with both claws. It is interesting to watch them move. Note the lines easily seen on its back which give the crab its common name. Lastly, note there are only two spines behind the eye of this crab, which are important for its ID. Date: 16 March 2007, 15:30. Source:

Zone 3 would have a similar crab called Hemigrapsus which would have purple spots on its claws and no lines on its back. Another field characteristic that helps ID this crab is that if you count the spines just behind the eye (the right one is easier to count), you count only two spines, which is a good way to separate this crab from the Mud Flat Crab. Lastly, this crab is diurnal. Date: 21 February 2007, 10:13. Source:
