體延長，側扁，背部稍隆起。吻不突出；口裂大，端位，稍傾斜，上頜稍長於下頜，上頜骨後緣達瞳孔後緣；上頜齒最外列齒擴大成犬齒，下頜齒最內列齒擴大成犬齒，上下頜兩側齒在前端中央處皆不相連；
吻緣孔5個，中央緣孔為三角形孔，內外側緣孔沿吻緣葉側裂，在外側緣孔處吻緣葉成3片狀；
吻上孔5個，中央3孔左右各有一外側上孔；頦孔為似5孔型呈弧形排列，中央頦孔隔成2孔，外側頦孔大呈三角形，內側頦孔裂縫型。鼻孔2個，長圓形後鼻孔較圓形前鼻孔大。
眼眶下緣距前上頜骨水平線有一鱗片寬。前鰓蓋具鋸齒緣，鰓蓋具2扁棘；具擬鰓；鰓耙短小。耳石為黃姑魚型，腹面蝌蚪形印跡之「尾區」呈「J」字型，末端達耳石外緣。吻端無鱗，眼周圍﹑頰部及前鰓蓋為圓鱗外，餘皆被櫛鱗；背鰭軟條基有一列鞘鱗。
胸鰭基上緣點在背腹鰭基起點前，鰓蓋末端下方；背腹鰭基起點上下相對，背鰭軟條基為臀鰭基長的4.6倍；
尾鰭楔形。腹腔有褐色細斑，胃為卜字形，幽門垂7個，腸為2次迴繞型，鰾為黃姑魚型，附枝19對。已固定標本，鰓蓋上有黑斑，背鰭棘部淺褐色，鰭皆無色；鰓腔褐色，口腔無色；在頭後，體側上半部的前部，背鰭棘部之前及下方，有向前下方傾斜的細條紋。
棲地

主要棲息於砂沙泥底質較淺沿岸海域，以小型甲殼類及小魚等底棲動物為食。鰾能發聲，在生殖期會發出「咯咯」的聲音。生殖季節在初夏，會群聚洄游至島嶼、內灣的近岸淺水域，秋冬則游入較深海域或南下越冬。
