They are native to China, Puerto Rico, US Minor Outlying Islands, Pacific Basin excluding Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, The Contiguous United States, and Hawaii. They have loculicidal capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Cheloninae, Siphona, Melon fly, and chalcidid wasps. Individuals can grow to 4.4 m.
