Sambucus nigra (Elder) is a species of tree in the family Adoxaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are associated with freshwater habitat. They are native to The Contiguous United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. They have compound, broad leaves and drupes. Flowers are visited by Cheilosia pagana, Andrena scotica, Melanostoma scalare, and small white. Individuals can grow to 5.2 m.
