I recently bought a white hydrangea and am surprised how much these wild blossoms are similar, though much smaller, of course.

Until I prove otherwise, I have identified this as bracted arrowwood. It is a very rare shrub in limestone areas in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Although it is late in the year and some of the taxonomic structures are gone my identification is based on the bracts at the base of the leaf stalk that Wayne noted and the short hairy leaf stalk.
