Vochisia ferruginea Mart. Nov. Gen. 1: 151. 1817.
Tree, 9-20 meters high, the trunk sometimes 60 cm. in diameter, the crown small and dense, the branchlets obscurely angulate, ferruginous-tomentulose; stipules triangular-subulate, 2 mm. long, finally deciduous; petioles 5-8 mm. long, tomentulose; leaf-blades oblong or elongate-elliptic, 8-16 cm. long, 3-4.5 cm. wide, cuspidate-acuminate, obtuse or acute at base, coriaceous, glabrous above and with inconspicuous venation, beneath ferruginous-tomentulose, especially on the nerves, the venation elevated, the lateral nerves 15-20 pairs, the secondary nerves reticulate; thyrses terminal and axillary, 6-15 cm. long, the rachis densely tomentulose, the cymes 1-5-flowered; pedicels slender, about 4 mm. long; bracts linear-subulate; buds 8-10 mm. long, 1.5 mm. thick; flowers orange-yellow; 4 of the sepals orbicular, ciliate, 1 mm. long, the posterior one with an oblong blade 7-8 mm. long, the spur elongate and circinate; petals oblong, obtuse, ciliate at apex, the intermediate one 7 mm. long; stamen 6-7 mm. long, the anther pilose on the margins, twice as long as the filament; ovary glabrous; fruit acutely trigonous, 2.5-3 cm. long, about 8 mm. in diameter; seeds compressed, samara-like, densely pilose, the body about 7 mm. long, the wing 15 mm. long and 4 mm. wide.
Type locality: Coari, Alto Amazonas, Brazil. Distribution: Panama and Brazil.
