Leafcutting bees are normally bright white sorts of things in North America...hoewever, there are a few such as this Megachile gemula that are dark, not in a psychological way, but in that their pollen carrying hairs are black instead of white and much their pale hairs bleed from off-white to yellowish. This is one of 3 regularly occurring species in the East and this one was found by Brianne Du Clos in Maine. I like looking at this shot, the symmetry, this alien being, this unknowable insect, there is something alive, even relatable here. This one is worth looking at full-screen. What if, indeed, this Megachile brevis, was as large as a puppy dog, would we treat it the same as we do now? A bug to be ignored, because it doesn't sting us and because it isn't the size that our eyes can view all the particulars, all the wonderful details that are built into this being in a similar but different way than the flowers that pollinate's and we honor by making him into bouquets and making them integral to all our major life events. Would they make good pets? Would they like to be groomed by us, scratched behind the head? This bee, Coelioxys immaculata, is an uncommon nest parasite of other bees. Almost by definition it must be less common since the young C. immaculata usurps a cell of a leaf-cutter bee, kills the host baby bee and eats its food before emerging the next year. I think this was the first confirmed state record (Maryland) for this species (Coelioxys immaculata). It was found in Caroline County in a sandy area. Not clear what it is a nest parasite of (almost certainly a Megachile). Something for someone to do....good amateur project. Picture by Amanda Hong.

A pair of head shots...including the rarely seen underside of a bee head. The species: Megachile campanulae. From: Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Status common and regular if you swing a net in the summer. Megachile always have lovely omatidia (those lovely hex things on the compound eyes). I an not sure why, but the photograph well and I am attracted to that look. Look at th underside shot. note the shape of the mandibles from this perspective, note the slot under the head where the folded tongue resides, look at the expanded tarsal segments on the front legs of this male...surely involved in mating (the only thing of significance male bees do). Now, friend, you have another window into how incredibly different bees are from you and me and all other vertebrates for that matter. A super successful planet earth model, just one unlikely to ever develop a large brain.
