Rhamnus cathartica (Common Buckthorn) is a species of shrub in the family Rhamnaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are native to Poland, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Belarus, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, Iran, Latvia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Eastern North America, Estonia, Ireland, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Turkey, Norway, France, Morocco, Belgium, Moldova, Albania, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Romania, Denmark, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, and Ukraine. They have simple, broad leaves and drupes. Flowers are visited by Chrysotoxum cautum, Andrena fucata, early mining bee, and Mitoura gryneus. Individuals can grow to 3.6 m.
