A juvenile alligator rests in the shade among duckweed along the bank of the appropriately named Gator Lake. Harassment and feeding is strictly prohibited, but these residents have to endure a constant barrage of human contact.St. Andrews State ParkGator LakePanama City, Bay County Florida, USAOlympus OM-D E-M10M.Zuiko ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 II RTiffen Circular Polarizer

Despite my stealth skills, this Gator was a little uncomfortable with me positioned behind it and it disappeared into the vegetation, and although it stirred up the bottom a little, it came right back, head first, for another look.Alexander Springs Recreation AreaOcala National ForestLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

It's just one of those hot and humid July afternoons, where you don't even want to move... it knows that sooner or later they'll get bored and just move on.American AlligatorAlexander Springs Creek Alexander Springs Wilderness AreaLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M5 Mark IIM.40-150mm F4.0-5.6 RTiffen Circular Polarizer

They just lay there... most of the time. But when you've been around for over 200 million years, I guess you've mastered how to lay around in the sun. Lower Santa Fe RiverGilchrist and Columbia County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M5 Mark IIM.40-150mm F4.0-5.6 RTiffen Circular Polarizer

For flips and turns, she relies on legs to act as rudders and flippers, but for swimming, it's all in the tail. I guess after about 40 million years, they've got it covered.American AlligatorAlligator mississippiensisAlexander Springs Recreation AreaOcala National ForestLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

This basking gator doesn't seem interested in showing off it's more prominent features, but if you think about it, that tail is likely to do much more damage if it gets upset with you.American AlligatorAlligator mississippiensisLa Chua TrailAlachua SinkPaynes Prairie Preserve State ParkAlachua County, Florida, USAOlympus OM-D E-M5 Mark IIM.40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R

Everybody knows about the business end of an alligator, but many don't know that the tail is extremely powerful, capable of inflicting serious injury. Another important reason to never antagonize them, always keep a safe distance, and of course, NEVER feed them. This particular gator popped out in the late afternoon, and swam along the edge of the bank. It found this spot in the vegetation to rest and watch over the spring head for awhile.Alexander Springs Recreation Area, Ocala National Forest, Lake County, Florida, USASeaLife DC1400Sea Dragon 1200 Photo/Video/Dive Light

Everyone knows that an alligator's bite is far worse than it's bark. When threatened, especially if cornered, the first defense is often a sudden, powerful thrash. The tale of the time you pulled this tail might not end well. This particular little alligator staked out a claim right next to the opening of a culvert.
