This female Pipevine Swallowtail came into my yard and made some efforts to oviposit on my Virginia Snakeroot (Aristolochia serpentaria). This was on May 25. I could only find one egg among the several plants on which it stopped (not this one) and the caterpillar did not emerge until June 1--see adjacent photo.Pcca20080525-1881a

Freshly-laid eggs of Pipevine Swallowtail, Battus philenor on Virginia Snakeroot, Aristolochia serpentaria. The eggs are about 0.9 mm in diameter, and this was the highest magnification I could get--lens was set to 4X, and the final magnification on the browsing size image is about 40X. Funny, I've seen the eggs several times, and they always appeared smooth to me.I'm happy with the photo, but it was difficult to get the color balance just right at this magnification--I may correct this in the future.Battus_philenorPCCA20070802-5165A

Crown flowerApocynaceae (Dogbane family)Native to Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and ChinaIntroduced tot the Hawaiian IslandsOahu, Hawaii, USAThis is a white flowered form. Crown flowers are used in lei and apparently popular with Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917), the last of Hawaii's ruling monarchs. There appears to be a love or hate affiliation with Crown flowers and Monarch butterflies, with some opinions straddling the fence. People who grow crown flowers for lei or merely as a landscape plant, understandably, do not want the caterpillars eating their plants. Those that love the Monarchs do not want to see them destroyed. But like it or not, Crown flower is a favored food for Monarch butterfly caterpillars in Hawaii. Untreated plants usually receive extensive damage to foliage.
