Inhabits lake bottom below 70 m. Feeds on worms (Ref. 4967). Coloration of live fishes is unknown. Dark to blackish coloration of gill filaments and suprabranchial organ is characteristic of this species (Ref. 78218).

Bathyclarias atribranchus is a species of airbreathing catfish endemic to Lake Malawi, in the countries of Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. This species grows to a length of 60 cm TL (23.6 inches).
