Description: A female carder bee feeds on a few remaining phacelia blossoms in late July. Although it's hard to see, she has whitish hairs next to her eyes but the center of her face is black. The males have a yellow patch in the center of their face. This female had just mated with a male; she immediately went back to feeding. No love life among bees, for sure. Note, too, the small dusting of pollen on her back. However, carder bees are in the Megachilidae family and the females carry pollen on the underside of their abdomens. So the pollen on her back is just part of the nature of things. Date: 24 July 2015, 13:08. Source: CarderBee_female_2531a. Author: JKehoe_Photos.
