Der Coquerel-Seidenkuckuck (Coua coquereli) ist eine Vogelart aus der auf der Insel Madagaskar endemischen Gattung der Seidenkuckucke (Coua). Das Artepitheton ehrt den französischen Naturforscher Charles Coquerel (1822–1867).
Der Coquerel-Seidenkuckuck erreicht eine Größe von 42 Zentimetern. Die Geschlechter sehen gleich aus. Bei den Altvögeln sind die Oberseite und die Flügel olivgrün mit einer stumpf bronzefarbenen Verwaschung. Der Schwanz ist dunkel bronzefarben. Das Gesicht ist schwarz. Die Unterseite, die Kehle und die Brust sind weißlich bis beige. Die Unterbrust ist violett lohfarben. Der Bauch und die Unterschwanzdecken sind olivgrau. Die Unterseite der Schwanzfedern ist schwarz. Die äußeren Schwanzfedern weisen weiße Spitzen auf. Die nackte Haut um die Augen ist dreifarbig. Über dem Augen ist sie himmelblau, hinter den Augen ist sie dunkelblau und schimmernd rosa-lila hinter dem blauen Hautbereich, der von schwarzen Federn umrandet ist. Die Iris umrandet ein blauer Augenring. Der Schnabel, die Beine und die Füße sind schwarz.
Bei den juvenilen Vögeln ist der Oberkopf grau. Das Gefieder ist stumpfer als bei den Altvögeln. Die Flügeldecken sind braun mit lohfarbenen Rändern. Die Hand- und Armschwingen weisen lohfarbene Spitzen und eine schwarze Subterminalbinde auf. Schwanz- und Steuerfedern sind wie bei den Altvögeln gefärbt. Die Unterseite ist weißlich und dunkler grau gebändert. Die Haut um die Augen ist stumpfblau ohne die schwarze Federumrandung der Altvögel. Die Iris ist dunkelbraun. Der Schnabel ist hell fleischfarben, der Schnabelfirst ist sepiafarben. Beine und Füße sind grau.
Beim Schlüpfen sind die Nestlinge unbefiedert und flaumlos. Die Haut ist violett schwarz. Der Schnabel ist hell rötlich. Der Gaumen ist leuchtend rosarot.
Die Stimme besteht aus lauten, klaren Reihen von zwei bis vier Pfiffen gefolgt von einem tiefen, weichen, rollenden, knurrenden „weerweer-weer“. Daneben sind ein paar höhere Töne in einem länger andauernden „weer-weer-weer-wink-wink“, Grunz- und Knurrlaute sowie ein schrilles „ayoo-ew“ zu hören.
Der Coquerel-Seidenkuckuck bewohnt die Ränder von Halbwüsten, trockene Wälder sowie feuchte Wälder mit begrenzter Bodenvegetation. In Sekundärwäldern ist er seltener anzutreffen. Er kommt in Regionen von Meereshöhe bis in Höhenlagen von 1000 Metern vor.
Der Coquerel-Seidenkuckuck ist im Norden und Nordwesten Madagaskars ziemlich häufig. Größere Populationen gibt es bei Ampijoroa, im Kirindy Forest und bei Zombitse. Er ist ein scheuer Vogel, da er in vielen Gegenden gejagt wird. Die IUCN stuft ihn in die Kategorie nicht gefährdet (least concern) ein.[1]
Der Coquerel-Seidenkuckuck geht auf Pfaden auf dem Waldboden sowie in den mittleren Baumschichten in ein bis fünf Meter Höhe auf Nahrungssuche. Die Nahrung besteht aus Insekten, darunter Grashüpfer, Schmetterlingsraupen, Nachtfalter, Käfer und Spinnen sowie aus Früchten und Samen.
Die Eier werden zwischen November und Januar gelegt. Das napfförmige Nest besteht aus Zweigen, kleinen Ästen, Blattstielen und Rinde. Es hat einen Umfang von 16 Zentimetern und ist 13 Zentimeter hoch. Die Nester werden in drei bis acht Meter Höhe entweder in Lianen oder auf dem Stamm eines Baumes errichtet. Das Gelege besteht aus zwei bis drei stumpfweissen Eiern, die 33,5 × 25 mm messen. Die Dauer der Brut- und die Nestlingszeit ist unbekannt.

Coquerel's coua is approximately 40 cm (16 in) in length and has a large blue patch of bare skin around the eye, a characteristic of the Coua genus that is similar to African turacos. The plumage is silky, the crown is black, the upper parts and tail are light brown or greyish-brown, and the lower breast and belly is suffused with red. The iris is red and the beak and legs are slaty grey.[2] As a member of the cuckoo family, it has a reversible third toe and resembles the coucal in its method of scrambling through tangled bushes and lianas while searching for food. Observations indicate that it can climb about 10 m (30 ft) above the ground.[3]
Coquerel's coua is endemic to Madagascar where it lives in the dry deciduous forest and gallery forest in the west of the island. It shares this habitat with the giant coua (Coua gigas). In this area, the wet season is from December to February, and this is followed by a long dry season.[4]
Coquerel's coua is predominantly a ground-dwelling bird. It feeds mainly on insects and other arthropods, with seeds also forming part of the diet. The diet and the feeding strategies used vary with the season, and include gleaning, probing the litter, chasing prey, leaping and sallying into the air to catch insects.[4]
Coquerel's coua is a solitary bird during most of the year, each bird having a home range. Towards the end of the dry season, birds form monogamous pairs, usually jointly occupying their individual home ranges. Breeding takes place in the wet season, between November and April. On several occasions males have been observed approaching females carrying a gift (a caterpillar or a grasshopper), but after mating, has consumed the insect himself. The nests are built a few metres off the ground in dense vegetation. Unlike most other cuckoos, this bird builds its own nest, incubates its own eggs and rears its young.[4] Clutch size averages 1.8 and the minimum incubation time is 13 days. The young have a patterned interior to the mouth (as do several related species) which may visually stimulate the parent to feed the juvenile. They leave the nest after about nine days, when still covered with down and unable to fly.[4] They then perch on the ground or among the undergrowth awaiting visits by the adults, which feed them caterpillars and crickets. This early fledging may be because of the danger of nest predation by such predators as the narrow-striped mongoose, the small Indian civet and the common brown lemur, snakes such as the Malagasy giant hognose, and birds such as the Madagascar harrier-hawk, the cuckoo roller and the Malagasy coucal.[4]
Although Coquerel's coua has a limited range in western Madagascar and the population appears to be decreasing, this is a slow trend and the bird is plentiful within its range. For these reasons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed its conservation status as being of least concern.[1]
