Hercules Beetle (Scarabeus hercules = Dynastes hercules, plate 40b) from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. I don't see the set of scarab beetle plates in the BHL Flickr set--I found this by paging through the reference on BHL itself. I cleaned up the background, cropped, and downsampled from the original to produce this one. Usually this species is shown in a lateral view--interesting to see a dorsal portrait.
A photograph of a drawing of the adult and larvae stage of Pericoptus truncatus. Part of plate XVII drawn by George Vernon Hudson sourced from the book New Zealand Beetles and their Larvae by George Vernon Hudson. Public Domain.
Goliath Beetle and others, plate 45 from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. Again, I don't see this one in the BHL photostream here on Flickr, so this is my own edited, cropped version based on the BHL scan. Species:1=Trichius fasciatus Lin.2=Platygenia barbata Schoen3=Cetonia aurata Lin4=Goliathus giganteus Lamarck; though listed as such, pattern is that of Goliathus regius5=Gymnetis nitida Fab. = Cotinis nitida (Linnaeus, 1758)
Attracted to a light trap at the northern terminus of Farmer Road, Julian, California in the hour before dawn in light rain. Later that day it was photographed in Cuyamaca Woods, Julian.
Found with a small number of other beetles of the same species in mid-morning on a sunny day. The beetles were clinging passively to the juniper branches.
