Slow moving amoeba, oval in outline but with length only slightly greater than width. Clear, anterior hyaline zone extends down the lateral margins of the cell. Anterior margin extensive occupying up to one third the length of the cell. No posterior uroid but there may be occasional short trailing filaments. Central cytoplasm finely granular, with a single spherical vesicular nucleus, contractile vacuole and a few crystals. Floating form without radiating pseudopodia. Feeds on bacteria and algae. Type species: D. guttula (Dujardin, 1835).
