Although J. L. Reveal (1977c) reduced Yucca neomexicana to a variety of Y. harrimaniae, the two taxa are morphologically and geographically distinct, and K. H. Clary’s (1997) DNA evidence supports their recognition as separate species.

Plants cespitose, forming single or open colonies, each separated by 35–60 cm, acaulescent or rarely caulescent; rosettes usually small, mostly asymmetrical. Stems, when present, primarily rhizomatous, shorter than 1 m. Leaf blade spreading, including distal leaves, spatulate-lanceolate, concavo-convex, thin, widest near middle, 15–46 × 0.7–2 cm, flexible, rather glaucous, margins entire, filiferous, brown or straw-colored. Inflorescences racemose, rarely paniculate proximally, arising within or more often 0–20 cm beyond rosettes, 4–7 dm; branches, when present, few, short; bracts reflexed when mature, purplish, narrowly triangular, proximal to 10 cm, distal 2–3 cm, tapering to pungent apex; peduncle sometimes scapelike, 0.1–0.4 m. Flowers pendent; perianth campanulate; tepals distinct, white to somewhat greenish white, usually tinged pink or purple, broadly lanceolate, 3–4.7 × 1.5–3 cm; filaments 1.3–1.7 cm; pistil 2.4–3.2 cm × 0.5–0.8 cm; style pale green or rarely white, 9–13 mm; stigmas lobed. Fruits erect, capsular, dehiscent, cylindrical, deeply constricted near middle, 3–4.2 × 2–2.7 cm, dehiscence septicidal. Seeds dull black, thin, 6–8 × 5–8 mm.

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana (englischer Trivialname „New Mexico Yucca“) ist eine Unterart der Pflanzenart Yucca harrimaniae in der Familie der Spargelgewächse (Asparagaceae).

Beschreibung

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana wächst solitär, stammlos bis gruppenbildend (selten mit Stämmen bis 50 cm Höhe). Das Wurzelsystem ist wie bei der Unterart Yucca harrimaniae subsp. sterilis rhizomartig. Die steifen, grünen Laubblätter sind 10 bis 30 cm lang und bis 2 cm breit. Diese Unterart hat die schmalsten Blätter der Yucca harrimaniae-Unterarten. Die Blattränder bilden feine Fasern.

Der in den Blättern beginnende Blütenstand ragt über die Blätter hinaus und wird 0,4 bis 1,4 Meter hoch. Die hängenden, glockenförmigen, kugeligen, zwittrigen Blüten weisen eine Länge von 2 bis 4 cm und einen Durchmesser von 2 bis 3 cm auf. Von den sechs gleichgestaltigen weißen bis cremefarbenen Blütenhüllblätter sind die äußeren manchmal teilweise violett überzogen. Die Blütezeit reicht von Mai bis Juli.

Verbreitung

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana ist in den US-Bundesstaaten New Mexico, Colorado und Oklahoma in Ebenen, auf flachen steinigen Hügeln und im Grasland in Höhenlagen zwischen 1300 und 1400 Metern verbreitet. Diese Art wächst vergesellschaftet mit Echinocereus reichenbachii, Echinocereus viridiflorus und Opuntia-Arten.

Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana ist in Mitteleuropa frosthart bis −20 °C. Sie ist in Sammlungen selten. In Deutschland, Mannheim, in der Sammlung von F. Hochstätter wachsen zwölf Jahre alte Exemplare ungeschützt im Freiland.

Systematik

Der botanische Namen wurde nach einem der Vorkommen im Staat New Mexico gewählt. Die gültige Beschreibung durch Fritz Hochstätter unter dem Namen Yucca harrimaniae subsp. neomexicana ist 1998 veröffentlicht worden.[1]

Synonyme sind Yucca neomexicana Wooton & Standl. (1913)[2] und Yucca harrimaniae var. neomexicana Reaval (1977)[3].
