Cymbidium goeringii (sometimes known as the "spring orchid") is a prized orchid species hailing from as far north as the Korean Peninsula, but also found in Japan and mainland China. Because of its more temperate native climate, this commonly cultivated Cymbidium is also grown as a garden subject and can be used as a hardy plant in gardens as temperate as zone 6 or 7.
A multitude of unique flower color forms and leaf-variegants of this extremely variable orchid are cultivated in Asia. Distinguished from C. ensifolium by its single-flowered inflorescence, flowers are variable in size and color, with green, whitish, red, and extremely dark maroon forms, which are exceptionally valuable. Blooming is generally from March to April. The flowers were traditionally dried and used to create a soothing tea served at weddings and other special events.
Cymbidium goeringii, the noble orchid, is an orchid found in temperate locations of East Asia including Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea.[1] The type specimen was collected in Japan.[1]
